Sthala Puraanam
When Thondaiman was the ruler of Thondai Mandalam, people were tortured by unruly gangsters. The king set out to destroy them. But they were very powerful having gained the support of negative forces, by means of mantrams & tantrams.

On his way back, the king's elephant caught its leg in a Mullai creeper. The king tried to cut the creepers with his sword. Blood started sprouting from the spot. The king cleared the spot & found a Svayabu Siva Lingam. The king was so upset that he had hurt the Lord & raised his sword to cut off his own head. Lord Siva appeared along with Uma Devi, Nandi Devar & his ganas and blessed the king. He sent Nandi Deva along with the king to destroy the gangsters.

The grateful king constructed a temple for the Lord. Since the Lingam was cut, a medcinal herbal sandal paste is appled to the Lingam (sandana Kaappu). The Devi sannadhi is seen to the right of the Lord sannadhi. The Nandi idol instead of facing the Lord, is seen facing the entrance of the temple. It is believed that he is on the alert looking to vanquish the bad elements.
There is a sanndahi for Thondaiman. In the outer prakaaram, there are the sannadhis of Vinayagar, Suryan, Virabadrar, Nagar, Lord Muruga with Valli & Deivayanai, Colzhapureeswarar & Kusalapureeswarar.

Marudamalai Murugan Temple

Marudamalai is one of the most popular abodes of Lord Muruga and in importance it is next only to the Arupadaiveedu ("The six Fort-Houses of Muruga"), for Muruga devotees. Some people consider Marudhamalai to be the unofficial seventh Padaiveedu of Muruga, along with a few other contenders for the spot, including Kunrakudy, Sikkal and Vayalur.

Like most Murugan temples, Maruthamalai Murugan temple is situated upon a scenic hill that is a part of the beautiful lush green Western Ghats and is about 15 km from the vibrant city of Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India.

This is an ancient temple. References to this temple are found in inscriptions in the Thirumuruganpoondi temple. ThirumuruganPoondi temple is a "Tevarapaadalpetrastalam" and is at least 1200 years old. So we can surmise that the Marudhamalai temple is older than 1200 years.

There is a shrine called the "Paambaatti Shithar Kugai" (Paambaatti Shithar cave) that is in proximity to the Murugan temple. Legend has it that a Sitthar referred to as the Paambaatti Sitthar lived here in Marudhamalai. Paambaatti Sitthar is one of the most notable 18 Sitthars. Pambaatti Sitthar as his name indicates that he was associated with snake charming. As is the custom of the Sitthars of Tamil Nadu, he too, in the interest of mankind, has written extensively on the medicinal values and applications of plants.

Near the foothills, there is a temple for Lord Pillayar who is known as the "Thaanthondri Vinaayakar" (which means that the Pillayar idol appeared on its own without human intervention.)

This temple is under the control of Religious endowments department of Government of Tamil Nadu. Lord Muruga Idol in the temple looks as below

This temple is located on a hilltop called Marutha Maillai (roughly translating to "hill of vegetation"), true to its name, the legend has it that this hill has many herbs of medicinal value. The hill is also home to a particular sect of tribal tamil people. The temple in recent years has been renovated and the local business community is supporting this activity. The temple also plans to have a rope car operate from the foothills. In recent years number of Nature cure clinics have come up nearby this hillside.

Awareness of Marudamalai has been enhanced through feature films produced by Chinnappa Devar in the 1970s. The kumbabishekam was performed in 1997. According to epic, a saint prayed to God sitting under a marudha tree for helping him quench his thirst and tiredness. Soon he noticed water springing from beneath the tree. Overwhelmed, he pronounced 'Lord Muruga' as as the Lord of Marudhajalapathi. In due course it became 'Marudamalai'.

What is Pradhosham

What is Pradhosham? We known that there is a waxing period of 15 days and waning period of nearly the same days for the Moon every month. In both these periods, on 15th day of thraiyodesi the 1 hour before and 1 hour after sunset and approximately, 4.30 P.M. to 7.30 P.M. (the time we see stars) will constitute PRATHOSAM. On Dhasami day (10th of both the periods) Gods and Demons (Devars and Asuras) churned the milk ocean. At the time emerged the Horrible Poison. This coupled with that split by Serpent Vasuki is called ‘HALAKALA POISON’
In order to save the gods sundar gave this in the form of Jambu Fruit to Lord shiva who took it and fxed it in his neck. Hence he is called neelakanta. (Blacknecked) Next day i.e. on Ekadasi day they churned the milk Ocean again. But on Dwadasi day (Twelth Day) on contintion of their churning they got the Nector (amrutham) Devas consumed the nector and danced with joys. During the thirteenth day three hours i.e. 1 hour before sunset and 1 hour after sunset Lord Shiva also danced between two horns of NANDHI DEVA. This time will eliminate all sins. As a special case, on this particulars day of PRADHOSAM ( i.e. thirteenth day of both the periods) at the given period of 4.30 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. we have to first offer our namaskaram to Nandhi Deva before rounding the temple pragaram. It is said in Great epics that rounding Adhikara Nandhi once in each direction. i.e. clockwise and anticlockwise will destroy a crore of sins. If at this time a person round Lord with Nandhi inside the Garbhagraham, he will get the fruit of rounding one crore times. Lord Shiva will come round thrice on TISHABHA. We should go round the PRODHASHA NAYAGA AND ADHIKARA NANDHI outside. It is also good to chant OM, UM, CHING, GILI thousand times.
After entering the temple we should first see Lord Chandikeswara, tell our name, time of entering the temple, and the purpose for which your have come for worship and where you have come from. Tell "I have come for worshipping" and just clap your both hands without much noise and tell him our grievance and bow before him.
Then we shall go through the same ways see adhikara Nandhi, Garbhagraha, Pradhoshanandhi and Lord – Shiva and offer bowings. While rounding the praharam, we should not cross the place where abhisheka. Theertham flows. (i.e. Nirmalaya Thotti) Then go to chandikeswarar again and tell our grievances. They will be rewarded according to their wish. We shall round the temple with full devotion uttering sincerely shivayanamaha all our wishes will be fulfilled.
Lord Nataraja saw that serpant dance under my feet which I dance. Pradhosa Nayaga dance in one foot, Jurahareswarar stand on three feet and begs for favour form Lord and he bleeses the great saints on three legs.
When the Pradhosham comes on a Saturday it is called Mahapradhosam. The somavara pradhosham worshipped with Thumbaivilvam and Arugu flowers will be more benificial and get sure success in their individual prayers. We should also round the temple atleast for three consequtive pradhosham in order to avail the needs on the individual. After rounding the temple we should tall prostrating befor Adhikara Nandhi. We shall take food at house only on returning after finishing pradhosha pooja. The fruit is dedicated to shiva. Those childless even for 15, 16 year have got children.
They will get victory and prosperity at all times. All disease will also disappear. Merchants who are in suffering, if they adopt this pradhosham worship will get improved business. Marriages will take place for those who follow this pradhosham worship as specifically mentioned in this procedure. All Sowbhagyam will come to such a person. All the woes will definitely disappear.
In conclusion, the request form Shir Dheivahanmugam Pradhoshasidhar, Kandachipuram is that every Hindu should worship Lord Shiva especially during pradhosham day in a particular time with the procedure pointed out in detail atleast for 3 consequtive pradhosham, to enable them to avail all possible needs in the world.
